THIS IS THE POI I have written about

Millions of Americans are living with Diabetes. Conversations have occurred where the cost of managing patients and this disease. Managing diabetes looks different for different patients. Patients with commercial insurance versus patients with medicaid, versus patients who are uninsured, live with their diagnosis very differently. As the price of insulin continues to rise, individuals with diabetes are often forced to chose between purchasing their medications or paying for other necessities, exposing themselves to serious short-and long term health consequences. (Cefalu, Dawes, Gavlak, Goldman, Herman, Van Nuys, Powers, Taylor, & Yatvin, 2018).
Caring for patients struggling with costs of healthcare is hard to watch, especially when their health is diminishing before your eyes. Managing diabetes alone is challenging, managing it with other co-morbidity is even more challenging. More needs to be done in helping patients with managing illnesses. In the the great USA, people who are residents, should not have to juggle paying for medication and having food for the month. Being able to pay for a gym membership is not an option for many. Low income families may not be able to prioritize a gym membership into their budget, therefore an Endocrinologist telling a patient to lose weight isn’t very fair. However if an insurance plan was willing to cover a gym membership in the patients zip code, then perhaps losing weight would be a more viable option.
Diabetes management costs Americans tons a year. Total direct costs of diabetes in the U.S; $116 billion in 2007, $176 billion in 2012, and $237 billion in 2017. (Riddle & Herman, 2018). It is evident that each year the expenses are only increasing. If American spent more on services and access to care and programs to mitigate increase in diabetes cases. Patients who are already diagnosed need more support and patients are presenting at risk, need more education. These billions of dollars need to be allocated for more education, access to healthier food options, access to city/state funded facilities that allows people have a membership to have the opportunity to exercise and achieve realistic health goals.
The amount that is being spent on medication for diabetes is too large. We need to find better ways to spend this money. I would like to see a legislator to fight for the decease in diabetes cases in neighborhoods, to have affordable healthy food choices, and exercise facilities to maintain healthy lifestyles.
