Healthy aging with art

For a long time, nursing homes have been seen as a place to accommodate older adults as
they await their death. The majority of these homes lack enough activities to keep the seniors
busy and ensure they still enjoy life. The available activities also fall short of being interesting
enough to stimulate happiness. This is mostly because the seniors may not be passionate about
what they are being asked to do, and being in their advanced years, they do not see the point in
such. As a result, they choose to isolate, sit silently, or occasionally talk to fellow seniors, which
doesn’t entirely uplift their spirit.
For many, even the younger generations, art is perceived to be a safe space. It is used to
uplift spirits when sad, entertain, teach and so much more. Even people living with disabilities
that hinder them from participating in the typical day to day activities enjoy music, painting, and
other creative arts (Paula, 140 – 148). It is, therefore, a valid inference to say that introducing art
programs in nursing homes can improve the quality of life lived by the seniors. This will keep
them busy, happier and healthier. This has been tested and proven, as seen in the “Alive Inside”
documentary that showed music being used to stimulate seniors in nursing homes to talk, sing
and even dance (Harmon, 111- 119).

Several projects and programs have been created to facilitate the successful adoption of
art in nursing homes. Some of these include, Music and Memory project that provides iPod to
seniors in nursing homes, Engage provides intergenerational programs for seniors. Dances for a
variable population program was also created to get older people into dancing. This program
provides fitness and dancing sessions for older adults. These programs are created by not for
profit organizations and are supported and implemented by national organizations, individual
volunteers, and philanthropists. Different programs are implemented at different levels, regional,
state, and across the country.
These projects are funded by related foundations, philanthropists, and well-wishers. For
instance, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Institute on Aging has provided
grants to dedicated individuals. They establish arts programs in music, dance, painting, singing,
poetry, and storytelling to enrich the lives of older seniors. The Eisner Foundation has provided
grant funds to Engage to support intergenerational programming. Most programs are also
dependent on donations from well-wishers who can give their donations through their websites,
volunteer to teach or provide material and instruments.
The programs assess their success through numbers of seniors participating in their
programs and assessing their mood and attitude from time to time (Mugambi, 235 – 242).
Participants are seen to be happier and more social, the relationships among them, staff, and
families improve, and the seniors are generally more energetic as they look forward to taking
part in activities that they love. (Richmond 425- 432). Feedback is gathered through discussions
with the seniors, staff, and family. Where it is not possible to hold one on one discussions,
surveys are sent out to the staff and family members. A livelier environment is also experienced
in the homes as compared to the traditional quiet and gloomy air surrounding the homes.

These programs open up career opportunities for individuals with interests in this field.
As these programs are assimilated across the countries, more people will be required to engage
the seniors. Some of the transferable skills applied in these areas include playing musical
instruments, painting, quilting, etc. The most significant opportunity in this space is the
expansive number of seniors, either in nursing homes or in their homes. These programs can be
applied to all older adults with interest in art. One of the significant challenges is the lack of
funding and resources to implement the programs.
This approach to arts opens up a different perspective to the arts management. There is a
need to create art that is befitting to this new audience and device new ways of promoting
intergenerational programs in society. This creates opportunities to look into emerging trends
like engaging, not-for-profit outfits that volunteer in these spaces to help implement the
programs. They also need to entice the public to participate in these initiatives as they are closer
to the seniors than any organization could be.
