PSY 302 JFKU Psychology Learning Theory Concepts Paper In order to complete this project you will need to complete two steps to support the knowledge you have gained in the course. You will research and then choose a scholarly article about a major learning theory. The article should have enough information to be able to critique and analyze the findings (think about case studies).
Once you are finished analyzing the article and writing a small critique, you will then write an essay that uses the finding from the research and your knowledge from the course to construct learning solutions for a hypothetical real-world scenario.
Your project should be focused on one of the following learning theories:
1. Classical conditioning
2. Operant conditioning
3. Observational learning
4. Rule-based learning
5. Developmental learning Final Project

Construct learning solutions using knowledge of concepts and theories
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In order to complete this project you will need to complete two steps to support the
knowledge you have gained in the course. You will research and then choose a scholarly
article about a major learning theory. The article should have enough information to be
able to critique and analyze the findings (think about case studies).
Once you are finished analyzing the article and writing a small critique, you will then write
an essay that uses the finding from the research and your knowledge from the course to
construct learning solutions for a hypothetical real-world scenario.
Your project should be focused on one of the following learning theories:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Classical conditioning
Operant conditioning
Observational learning
Rule-based learning
Developmental learning
PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS
Your project should be a total of 10-12 pages (suggested length), for both the review
and the essay. Be sure to cite your references according to APA format.
Part One: Research and Review (Suggested length: 4-5 pages)
1.
Find a research article that reports on major learning theories. Consider
searching for peer reviewed articles, case studies, trade journals, or other
professional scholarly sources.
2.
The research article should apply a major learning theory in a real-world
context (classical conditioning, operant conditioning, developmental learning, or

observational/rule-based learning to human behavior). This can be at school, at work,
or during counseling sessions, or if conducted in a lab, the study should contain clear
real-world implications. Copy and paste a link to the article you choose into your
document for the evaluator.
The research article selected should identify with one of the following learning
theories/theorist:
Psychoanalytic (Freud, Jung, Adler, Erikson)
Behaviorism/Rule-based learning (Pavlov, Skinner, Thorndike, Watson)
Constructivist (Piaget, Bruner, Knowles, Dewey)
Humanistic (Rogers, Glasser, Maslow)
Experiential (Kolb)
Social Learning (Bandura)
Social Constructivism (Vygotsky)
Motivation and Learning
Language and Learning
Ecological System (Bronfenbrenner)
3. Introduce a research study on learning and applicable theory
Write the introduction to your review (Suggested length: 1 page):
a. Fully describe the study and analyze how it is related to learning theory
b. Explain the major learning theory associated with the article.
c. Relate the learning theory applicable to the research by noting examples.
d. Discuss the research design and what the research is investigating.
4. Describe the four components of the learning study
In the body of the review, paraphrase the research findings from this study.
Be sure to describe the following components for the study (Suggested length: 2
pages):
a. Purpose: Describe the authors rationale for conducting the study.
b. Method: Describe the studys methodology and include basic
information such as sample/participants, design,
instrumentation/materials if appropriate, procedures, and analytic
strategy. Make sure you describe each important aspect of the
studys methodology. Studies may differ in the subsections within
their method sections.

c. Results: Describe the studys results in non-technical terms. Use
your own words to describe the findings. There is no need to include
statistical information, although directionality of results should be
included.
d. Discussion: Explain the authors conclusions on the real-world
implications of the studys findings, most likely in the real-world
situation that the study originally examined. You should also
address what additional knowledge this study has added to the field
of learning theory.
5. In the conclusion of the review, answer the following questions by providing
examples or elaboration between theory and the research article (Suggested length: 1-1
½ pages):
a. How did the outcomes and participant responses in the research support the
purpose of the study?
b. What did the outcomes teach you about the theory related to the study? You
should also address what additional knowledge this study has added to the
field of learning theory.
c. What value did the study provide in relation to understanding the theory and
how it was applied?
i.
Example: if praising kids too much in a learning environment leads to a
false-sense of academic superiority, the value of the research is to
understand external motivation might not produce the best results.
d. Given the findings of this study and what you now know about research
methods and theories of learning, do you agree with the conclusions that the
author reached? Explain why or why not.
Part Two: Application and Essay (Suggested length: 6-7 pages)
Part two of this project focuses on the applying your critique and incorporating the findings
with a hypothetical scenario (with instructional and learning issues). In this section, you will
write an essay where you construct solutions for the hypothetical scenario by applying the
learning theory you learned about in Part 1.
Write the essay using the steps below:
1. Introduce and construct your hypothetical learning situation
Create a fictional instructional scenario that is applicable to the learning theory you selected

and the research article you reviewed in Part 1 (Suggested length: 2 pages).
a. Introduce your hypothetical learning situation by creating a purpose statement of
why this type of theory is applicable to the scenario, and what the learning
scenario is attempting to accomplish.
b. Discuss how the hypothetical situation incorporates the applicable learning
theory and how it is related to the article reviewed.
c. In detail, describe and outline the learning scenario:
What is the methodology behind it?
Who are the sample/participants?
What design does it have?
What is the instrumentation/materials if appropriate and procedure?
d. Use your knowledge of research findings, learning concepts, and theories to
construct solutions to your hypothesized problem(s).
Examples: Teachers instructing students in a classroom, parents teaching children
at home, children watching each other on a playground, trainers teaching dogs
tricks, etc.
2. Apply learning knowledge and research to solve learning problems
Discuss hypothetical learning problems with your chosen scenario and apply knowledge from
your research findings to build creative solutions to resolve them (Suggested length: 1- 1 ½
pages).
a. Discuss an appropriate learning problem or problems your hypothetical
instructional scenario addresses that are applicable to the previous research
study; related to the theory or study.
b. Discuss and describe the theory related to your hypothetical instructional
scenario that is applicable to the research article you have read that can solve
the research problem(s).
c. Use the findings from the article and from the theory to explore two or more
plausible solutions to the learning problem.
i. Example: teachers instructing students in a classroom to solve math
problems, parents teaching children to clean their rooms, children
watching each other on a playground to learn how to ride a bike,

trainers teaching dogs tricks; how do each one of these scenarios
address the problem and create solutions?
d. Include one or more learning problems that might occur in your scenario and
provide at least two solutions that apply exclusively to your hypothetical
scenario.
i. Example: if your scenario is an early education classroom, some
problems you might identify could include students failing the course or
not being prepared for exams, having a noisy and distracting learning
environment, having children at different developmental levels in the
same class, or having students of differing motivations and cultural
backgrounds in the same class.
3. Conclusion (Suggested length: ½ –1 page):
a. In a conclusion paragraph for the essay, briefly summarize your solutions.
b. For each solution, explain how the findings from the previously critiqued
research study support your solutions for your real-world situation.
i. Example: if this study was conducted in an elementary-school
classroom, how might that studys findings be used to support your
solutions to enhance learning in a college classroom, in a counseling
session, or in some other situation?
PROJECT SUBMISSION
1. A title page is not required for project submissions. Because evaluators do not see
student names when reviewing student work, it is important that students not include
any personal identifiers in their project submissions.
