is compressed to 2.5 MPa in a reversible and adiabatic process. Calculate the
final temperature and work done per unit mass. Answer: 912 K, -398.5 kJ/kg
2. A handheld pump for a bicycle has a volume of 25 cm3 when fully extended.
You now press the plunger (piston) in while holding your thumb over the exit
hole so that an air pressure of 300 kPa is obtained. The outside ambient
temperature and pressure are at 300K and 100 kPa. Consider two cases (a) it
is done quickly (~1s) and (b) it is done very slowly (~ 1 hr). Find the final
temperature and volume for each case. Assume each case is reversible.
Answer: (a) 410 K, 11.4 cm3; (b) 300 K, 8.33 cm3
3. Steam enters an adiabatic turbine at 8 MPa and 500°C with a mass flow rate
of 3 kg/s and leaves at 30 kPa. The isentropic efficiency of the turbine is 0.90.
Neglecting the kinetic energy change of the steam, determine (a) the
temperature at the turbine exit and (b) the power output of the turbine.
Answer: (a) 69.1°C; (b) 3054 kW.
